Upcoming Releases from Atlas Model Railroad
HO Trainman® GP39-2 Phase 1 Locomotive

The GP39-2 was offered by EMD as a fuel-efficient alternative to their very popular GP38-2 model. This efficiency resulted from the use of a turbocharged 12-cylinder 645E3 diesel engine, as opposed to the non-turbocharged 16-cylinder prime mover in the GP38-2. The use of a turbocharger increased the horsepower output from 2,000 to 2,300hp with four fewer cylinders. One other benefit of the turbocharger is improved operation at higher altitudes where thin air causes normally-aspirated diesels to lose power and produce excess smoke. The largest original fleet of GP39-2s was assembled by the Santa Fe who, over the course of seven years, acquired a total of 106 units.
Our model represents a “phase 1” GP39-2 locomotive which was produced between 1974 and late 1976. The overall appearance of a phase 1 model is similar to that of a GP38-2 except for the presence of a single turbocharged exhaust stack. There were only four original owners of the phase 1 GP39-2 including Santa Fe, Reading, Delaware & Hudson and a single-unit order for Kennecott Copper. Many of these units had interesting careers and nearly all are still in service today operating for BNSF, Union Pacific, CSX, and Pacific Northwest shortline Portland & Western.
This first production run represents a “then and now” of sorts. Delaware & Hudson amassed a fleet of forty units, purchasing twenty new and receiving Reading’s twenty units after the formation of Conrail. The former Reading units were only 14 months old at the time and were re-numbered as D&H 7401-7420 (those built new for D&H were numbered 7601-7620). The ex-Reading units were then sold to CSX in 1991 and continue to operate for that carrier today. Several Santa Fe phase 1 GP39-2s were sold in 1993 to shortline Willamette & Pacific which (as of December 2000) is now operated as the Portland & Western. The Portland & Western units we are offering wear an orange & black paint scheme that reflects Genesee & Wyoming’s corporate ownership of that line.

New From Walthers – Fastest US Passenger Train Set From Rapido Plus New Product Previews
Posted by webmaster under New Products1 Comment
On December 20, 1967, the United Aircraft TurboTrain reached a record-shattering 170.8mph on the Pennsylvania Railroad in New Jersey. To this day, this is still the fastest speed ever achieved by a production train in North America.
Rapido Trains Inc. is proud to preset the first-ever accurate model of this unique train in any scale. Each train features one Intermediate Car and two Power Dome Car locomotives. For speed and reliability, both engines are powered, and both have sound decoders (sounds include turbines, bell, doors, station announcements and the unit’s distinctive horns, all taken from prototype recordings) and speakers. More Intermediate Cars are available to make a longer train. Several different Coach, Café and Club cars are available, depending on the choice of paint scheme. The TurboTrain operates with or without sound on both DC and DCC.
The TurboTrain comes with numerous factory-applied detail parts; working full-width diaphragms, full interior lighting, constant directional headlights and operating Gyralites, a decal sheet with additional logos and car numbers, a 48-page, full-color book on the history of the TurboTrain featuring dozens of never-before-published photographs and a hand-held controller for operating the train sounds in DC.
The TurboTrain features interior detail that has rarely been attempted in HO Scale including padded armrests, faucets in the bathroom sinks, gauges in the engineman’s cab, and a microwave behind the counter in the café car. The models are fully prototype-specific, with three different Power Dome Car designs represented and five Intermediate Car styles available. Minimum radius is 18″ without diaphragms, 24″ with diaphragms.

When EMD was given the green light to build new passenger diesels in early 1945, it unveiled an improved version of the successful E6, designated the E7. A pair of 567A prime movers, rated at 2000 total horsepower, now supplied power. Most of the notable changes were seen on the body and included a new and much smaller bulldog nose, as well as a large, vertical louver or screen panels directly behind the cab doors.
Introduced just as American railroads began upgrading and rebuilding passenger service, the E7 was the most successful passenger diesel ever built, with 428 A units and 82 cabless B units produced through April of 1949 when the E8 was unveiled.
Models feature authentic Milwaukee Road details, and are painted and lettered to match Walthers “Hiawatha” cars (#932-9000 series).
Conrail #1685
$109.98
EMD introduced the GP15-1 in 1975 as a replacement for aging GP7s and GP9s still serving in switching, transfer and wayfreight service. Offering 1500 horsepower, the new design was better suited to the bigger and heavier cars then entering service, while the low nose improved forward visibility for added safety. As an added incentive, EMD required customers to provide a trade-in unit, which supplied traction motors, trucks and main generators, reducing the purchase price. Outwardly, GP15-1s looked like 35 Series engines, with a road-style cab and short nose. The most distinguishing feature was the single 48″ fan and tunnel motor air intake for the radiators. Later versions included the GP15-1AC, equipped with an alternator instead of a generator and the GP15T, which added a turbocharger to the AC model. Nearly 370 of the three styles were built for US railroads between 1976 and 1983, and many are still going strong today.
